On July 19, 2018, the Knesset adopted the Basic Law on the National Character of the State, and since then there has been an ongoing discussion in the country on its symbolic meaning and practical consequences, as well as on the legitimacy of the formulas used in this law. The most significant issue in this discussion is the long-debated one of whether the Supreme Court has the power to discuss the legitimacy of the adoption of a Basic Law and to invalidate such a law. The main interpretation of the specific provisions of the law should become the subject of wide public dialogue between both Israelis and the Diaspora.
